Lenovo ThinkPad tablet with Windows 8 and Intel Inside stops by the FCC

Bearing a TP00043AWD model number, Lenovo's Windows 8 ThinkPad tablet has apparently stopped by the FCC for testing, making it the second we've seen after ASUS' Tablet 810 made the rounds. Although there aren't any glamor shots or specs available, the design shown closely matches the tablet we spent some hands-on time with at Computex in June and a quick zoom in the lower right corner reveals that new Windows logo alongside another one for Intel. When we saw it last the spec list included a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 display, Intel Clover Trail CPU, 2- and 8MP cameras front and back plus the usual assortment of connectors. Check after the break for a bigger look at the diagram and zoom of the revealing logos, or hit the source link to go through any unsealed documents with a fine toothed comb.

With a very changeable summer this year in the UK, pest control in London has been an even greater requirement for the Capital's residents, and cases of bed bugs in particular have been on the rise.

With the Queen's Jubilee and Olympics taking place this summer in London, hotels and guesthouses have reported a sharp rise in bed bug problems. This is because people travelling to the UK are unwittingly bringing this troublesome pest with them in their clothes and luggage and leaving them behind in their hotel ready to pass on to the next hotel resident.

But it's not just bed bugs that are a problem for people here in the UK. Flies, ants, pigeons, wasps, mice, spiders, moths, woodlice and cockroaches are also prevalent in homes and offices throughout London.

Cockroaches, rodents and pigeons in particular are of great concern to people in the Capital. They not only carry disease and bacteria that can be potentially harmful to humans, they also spread germs and bacteria around homes including kitchens where food is prepared. This can lead to e-coli food poisoning, which is a potentially life threatening condition.

Akeel Jaffar from HLA Pest Control in London says:

"We are seeing increasing numbers of bed bugs especially from hotel owners who are finding that they cannot keep on top of their infestation problems. Bed bugs are incredibly good at hiding in cracks, crevices and creases - especially behind light fittings and plug fixtures, making the problem difficult for non-professionals to tackle. After the Olympics in Sydney in 2000, there was a marked increase in cases of bed bugs this was due to the amount of people travelling to Australia and leaving bed bugs behind to breed at an alarming rate.

"For homes in London, mice are a huge problem as mice can fit through very small holes and with the damp wet weather they have been seeking shelter indoors. These pests can be dealt with by homeowners, but there is no guarantee that the pest will be completely eradicated and won't come back. We recommend that people call in the professionals to guarantee the permanent removal of pests and that pet and child-safe chemicals are used."

How Do the Common Core Reading Standards Honor Practice ...

In Part 1 of this series, we discussed how the writing standards explicitly addressed the importance of practice in anchor standard 10, clearly communicating to educators that the only way to produce clear, coherent arguments, narrative, and informative texts is through dedicating large amounts of time to practice. ?When looking at the reading standards, the importance of practice is not as cut and dry. ?The closest this section of the Common Core comes to explicit is in the sidebar on page 10 that reads, ?through extensive reading of stories, dramas, poems, and myths?? The word ?extensive? connotes that a lot of reading is necessary in order to achieve these standards, however, unlike the writing standards, which include a standard that directly addresses the importance of practice, the need for reading practice is far more implicit in the reading standards.

In this two-part post, we will look at each segment of the reading standards as we consider whether or not the Common Core goes far enough in extending the message that practice is imperative if students are to achieve the standards outlined by the Common Core.

Key Ideas and Details
1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing and speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development, summarize the key supporting details and ideas.
3. Analyze how and why individuals, events and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.

These three standards of the Common Core seem to suggest that reading volume is developed in part by reading slowly and carefully. ?These standards support the practice of thinking while reading implying that reading practice should not be narrowly defined as reading lots of books, but also should include thinking and re-reading as part of the definition. Re-reading and thinking while reading are not tasks that are achieved in short spans of time. ?These efforts require readers to dedicate significant amounts of time. So, with regard to our original question about whether the reading standards honor practice, we think they do. While there aren?t explicit references to practice in the Common Core State Standards, students won?t meet these standards unless they have a lot of time with text.

Craft and Structure
4. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning and tone.
5. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of a text (e.g. a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole.
6. Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text.

Like the first three standards that we explored, these three reading anchor standards from the Common Core continue to emphasize the importance of re-reading and thinking. These standards value depth of understanding thereby placing great emphasis on the process of meaning-making. ?Standard five refers to ?texts? in the plural indicating to readers that the expectation is that students will not do this with only one text but several. ?With regard to honoring practice, once again, these three standards seem to advocate for the kind of practice that helps students hone their critical thinking skills through close, careful analysis.
However, is this sort of practice myopic? Is there a place in the standards that supports that ?extensive? reading alluded to in the sidebar on page 10? More on that tomorrow as we look at the remaining four reading standards of the Common Core.

count on me for life: Advice on reconnecting?

Happy Med Monday!

Today, I wanted to talk about reconnecting. Lately, I haven't seen Andy very much, and it has been hard on our relationship. In medical school, we were in a long distance relationship, so not seeing each other very much was expected. During fourth year of medical school, he was home by 5 PM every day and didn't go to bed until midnight or 1 AM. Residency is different. He goes to work at 6 or 7 M and comes home at 7 PM at the earliest most days. Last night, he came home at 10:30 PM. And he went to bed at 11 PM. I know what we're supposed to do - put everything aside and have a conversation, go to bed at the same time, eat meals together. But that's hard when there's no time to do those things. How do you reconnect with your significant other when you only see him or her for about a half hour each day?
