Union says Crystal Sugar refused ?real negotiations?

Workers had been hopeful the talks would end a 10-month-old lockout that has devastated families and communities in the Red River Valley. Some 1,300 workers are locked out at seven Crystal Sugar production plants and other facilities in Minnesota, North Dakota and Iowa.

?While not surprised, employees of American Crystal Sugar are disappointed with the outcome of today?s mediation session,? said BCTGM Local 167G President John Riskey, the union?s lead negotiator. ?We came prepared for genuine negotiations and with positive proposals to help bring an end to this stalemate.

?Union negotiators offered detailed proposals addressing management concerns about health care, drug testing, the role of seniority and qualifications in promotions, and other matters. We came to the table ready for constructive, problem-solving conversations to fashion an agreement acceptable to union workers, farmers and managers.

?Unfortunately, Dave Berg and his management team made clear that they are not willing to compromise on any issue and intend to prolong the lockout until every single one of their terms is met without amendment or qualification.

?But this lockout cannot and will not end unless there is cooperation at the bargaining table. Cooperation involves a give and take between parties and often involves compromise.

?As representatives of a democratic organization, we will report the results of today?s meeting to union members who will deliberate and decide our next course of action.?

Leading up to Friday?s bargaining session, union members had conducted a weeklong ?Caravan of Cooperation and Negotiation? to urge a settlement.
