Sect wounds soldier in besieged north Nigeria city (AP)

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria ? A Nigerian official says suspected members of a radical sect set off a bomb near a mosque, wounding a soldier in the country's restive northeast.

Col. Victor Ebhaleme says Sunday's blast destroyed a patrol vehicle parked in front of the mosque in Maiduguri, but that no one was killed.

Hospital authorities say a soldier sustained a minor injury.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, has carried out increasingly violent sectarian attacks over the last year.

They claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 car bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria that killed 23 people and wounded 116 others.
