A group of engineers who previously worked at Apple and NASA created an $11,111 coffee maker that measures the liquid?s heat as it brews to maintain the ?perfect? temperature.

Blossom Coffee?company is the brainchild of coffee fan,?Jeremy Kuempel, and two colleagues. Kuempel is an MIT engineering graduate who previously worked on Apple?s iPad and at electric-car maker Tesla.

The company debuted its first luxury product?at Tech Crunch?s Disrupt Conference earlier this month and is taking pre-orders for about 10 of the Blossom One Limited, which are intended for commercial use and will be available in the spring, the company said.

The Blossom One Limited is about the size of a traditional desktop computer, measuring 7 inches wide. So far, restaurants, cafes and private individuals have inquired about owning one.

When asked if he?s a coffee drinker, Kuempel answered, ?I?m obsessed with it.?

PHOTOS: $11,111 Coffee Maker Available for Pre-Orders

The company wanted to keep coffee as ?front and center? as possible, so the machine?s design only allowed the coffee to touch glass and steel, which are inert materials that won?t react with it.

?We started with the coffee and designed around it,? Kuempel said.

It also has Wi-Fi capability and a camera for a QR scanner. Why a camera?

Kuempel said the company is working with high-end coffee bean providers to one day allow users to scan a QR code on the coffee bag. That way, the coffee maker will know exactly what type of coffee it is and how to brew it.

?This is how crazy we are about coffee, design and service,? Kuempel said.

Blossom Coffee also is hoping to embody its enthusiasm for coffee in its level of customer service.?Built into the price of the coffee maker is a one-year parts and labor warranty that will bring a company representative to your door for any problem.

?We will be there to fix it, and we won?t charge you for it,? Kuempel said.

In addition, the coffee maker has a lifetime defect-free guarantee saying that it is free from errors; or, in other words, that the ?machine will do what we say it will do,? Kuempel said.

Not only that, but the company will work with clients to build a coffee maker that is perfect for them, including the device?s exterior. The company aims to?match whatever wooden material is requested.

Kuempel said, ?A lot of coffee houses feature wood in their design. We will go to lengths to find the exact same wood.?

What about marble or glass?

?We can?t promise it, but we will investigate it? and do whatever we can,? he said.

Where can I get information on foreclosed homes? - Zillow Real ...

They are bank owned homes and REO's you are asking about. Contact a local Realtor in the area you are interested in, but don't just look at bank owned homes, look at ALL homes in your price range. Why limit yourself to just ones owned by banks? They are often not as cared for and the banks won't fix anything and they are all competing so they are priced about the same.

Marine plants can flee to avoid predators: First observation of predator avoidance behavior by phytoplankton

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Scientists at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography have made the first observation of a predator avoidance behavior by a species of phytoplankton, a microscopic marine plant. Susanne Menden-Deuer, associate professor of oceanography, and doctoral student Elizabeth Harvey made the unexpected observation while studying the interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton.

Their discovery will be published in the September 28 issue of the journal PLOS ONE.

"It has been well observed that phytoplankton can control their movements in the water and move toward light and nutrients," Menden-Deuer said. "What hasn't been known is that they respond to predators by swimming away from them. We don't know of any other plants that do this."

While imaging 3-dimensional predator-prey interactions, the researchers noted that the phytoplankton Heterosigma akashiwo swam differently in the presence of predators, and groups of them shifted their distribution away from the predators.

In a series of laboratory experiments, Menden-Deuer and Harvey found that the phytoplankton not only flee when in the presence of the predatory zooplankton, but they also flee when in water that had previously contained the predators. They found only a minimal effect when the phytoplankton were exposed to predators that do not feed on phytoplankton.

"The phytoplankton can clearly sense the predator is there. They flee even from the chemical scent of the predator but are most agitated when sensing a feeding predator," said Menden-Deuer.

When the scientists provided the phytoplankton with a refuge to avoid the predator -- an area of low salinity water that the predators cannot tolerate -- the phytoplankton moved to the refuge.

The important question these observations raise, according to Menden-Deuer, is how these interactions affect the survival of the prey species.

Measuring survival in the same experiments, the researchers found that fleeing helps the alga survive. Given a chance, the predators will eat all of the phytoplankton in one day if the algae have no safe place in which to escape, but they double every 48 hours if they have a refuge available to flee from predators. Fleeing makes the difference between life and death for this species, said Menden-Deuer.

"One of the puzzling things about some phytoplankton blooms is that they suddenly appear," she said. "Growth and nutrient availability don't always explain the formation of blooms. Our observation of algal fleeing from predators is another mechanism for how blooms could form. Amazingly, looking at individual microscopic behaviors can help to explain a macroscopic phenomenon."

The researchers say there is no way of knowing how common this behavior is or how many other species of phytoplankton also flee from predators, since this is the first observation of such a behavior.

"If it is common among phytoplankton, then it would be a very important process," Menden-Deuer said. "I wouldn't be surprised if other species had that capacity. It would be very beneficial to them."

In future studies, she hopes to observe these behaviors in the ocean and couple it with genetic investigations.

NATO soldier, civilian, killed in Afghan "insider" attack

KABUL (Reuters) - A member of NATO's Afghan force and a civilian contractor have been killed in the latest so-called insider attack by a member of the Afghan security forces, the NATO force said on Sunday.

The attack in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday came after the United States said joint operations with Afghan forces were returning to normal.

Joint operations were halted two weeks ago after a surge of attacks by Afghan allies. At least 52 members of the NATO force have been killed this year in so-called green-on-blue attacks.

It was too early to say what impact the latest incident would have on plans to restore joint-operations with Afghan forces to normal, a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force said.

The food blog: running a restaurant in London

The London restaurant scene is finally putting the recession behind it after a recent Zagat survey revealed there has been a "dramatic rise" in restaurant openings in the past 12 months.

I bought my favourite local restaurant two years ago, The Laughing Gravy near Waterloo, a move that many thought was insane. The restaurant had fallen into the wrong hands and had been run into the ground. One friend warned me: "You may as well take your money and throw it into the gutter."

But I was determined and steadfast in my belief that Londoners still wanted good, honest places to go out to eat even if funds were tight.

I knew that this wasn't going to be an easy task. I wanted to create a place that served top quality food and meals but in a relaxed, informal and friendly environment. With the continuing rising cost of food and the overheads of a small business it has become harder and harder to offer quality produce at fair prices.

And so I turned to other sources to try and sustain my ideals. We use herbs and vegetables from a Tate funded community garden right next door to the restaurant.? Our walls our adorned with art from a local gallery based in the Oxo tower and we have a library of books in the bar to add to the cosy feel - all bought from a nearby charity shop, with customers invited to swap books when they come to dine.

It's a tough business for sure. We're open all week and on weekend nights there can be 100 covers. My days are generally16 hours long and I firmly believe that you have to fully immerse yourself in the business to keep it ticking along and to ensure it doesn't sink under the financial strain.

So I work as general manager, PR department, book keeper, accountant, cleaner and when I can? customer. The enjoyment of seeing a busy dining room on a nightly basis when so many said it wasn't possible is enough satisfaction to make all the hard work worth while.? And to then have customers taking time out of their own busy lives to leave reviews on review websites makes it even more rewarding.

So despite the recession this has been proof that if you build a business that caters to peoples' needs, they will come to it.

The Laughing Gravy, 154-156 Blackfriars Road, SE1 8EN (020 7998 1707, thelaughinggravy.co.uk)

Save on Cost: Outsource Your Business Design | MICINC Business ...

For small business owners, handling business designs in-house may seem like a great way to save money. After all, small business owners tend to look at any expense as something to be avoided. With the somewhat tumultuous nature of current world financial markets, this is usually a healthy mentality to hold. However, it can end up costing business owners more money than they?re saving in certain conditions. Graphic design is one example of something that should be outsourced to professionals.

How Do-It-Yourself Can Cost You

For a business owner, the concept of an hourly wage flies entirely out the window. When someone is in charge of an entire business, they work long hours that make any income seem small in comparison. This says a lot about the strength, determination, and work ethic of those bold souls who enter the business world. However, it also displays the need for speed and efficiency in everything a business owner does. All time is precious here.

Some people mistakenly look at design as something that anyone can do. The truth is that
graphic designers undergo years of training and work experience to learn their craft. This is not something that comes easily, and it is something which should be taken seriously. When a business owner hires a trained designer to do designs for a business, then he or she can save money in the long run.

Outsourcing Design for Profit

When this concept is looked at in a rational way, it makes quite a lot of sense. You should consider how much time it will take to essentially learn an entire trade. The time spent messing around with design software and learning coding could be spent on projects that earn money. Instead of spending time learning a design software, business owners should be developing customer relationships and making sales. In the end, business owners usually end up needlessly spending a significant amount of time in the creation of a sub-par design. This is not a smart use of time by any standard.

Design professionals are trained in how to use software and how to create eye-catching designs. This is a trade requiring skills that take years to develop. Business owners should absolutely consider outsourcing their design needs to a qualified design professional. It saves time, it saves money, and it results in a much more attractive and useful business design.

White shark diets vary with age and among individuals

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Many white sharks shift from fish to marine mammals as they mature, but individual sharks show surprising variability in dietary preferences.

White sharks, the largest predatory sharks in the ocean, are thought of as apex predators that feed primarily on seals and sea lions. But a new study by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, shows surprising variability in the dietary preferences of individual sharks.

The researchers described their findings in a paper published online September 28 in PLoS ONE. They analyzed the composition of growth bands in shark vertebrae to trace variations in diet over a shark's lifetime. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen incorporated into an animal's tissues serve as a natural tracer of dietary inputs.

"We did find that white shark diets changed with age, as expected, but we were surprised that the patterns and extent of change differed among individuals," said Sora Kim, who led the study as a UCSC graduate student and is now at the University of Wyoming.

The researchers analyzed vertebrae of 15 adult white sharks that had been caught along the west coast (14 off California and one off Baja California). Sharks in this population consume a wide range of prey, including seals, sea lions, dolphins, fish, and squid. But not every shark eats the same mix of prey, said coauthor Paul Koch, professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UCSC.

"We confirmed that the diets of many individuals observed at seal and sea lion rookeries shift from fish to marine mammals as the sharks mature," he said. "In addition, we discovered that different individual sharks may specialize on different types of prey. These two types of flexibility in feeding behavior are difficult to document using traditional methods, but may be very important for understanding how the population is supported by the eastern Pacific ecosystem and how it may respond to changes in that ecosystem."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently announced that it will consider whether to protect the west coast population of white sharks under the Endangered Species Act.

Tagging studies have shown that the white sharks found along the California coast have a regular migratory pattern, cruising coastal sites from late summer to early winter and moving to offshore areas during the rest of the year. While sharks within this population may have predictable movement patterns, the new study shows that there are important dietary and behavioral differences among individual sharks.

The study relied on vertebrae obtained from white shark specimens in various collections. The sharks had been caught at different times and places along the coast from 1957 to 2000. "Interestingly, we do see a small shift in diet as marine mammal populations increased after the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972," Kim said.

In addition to Kim and Koch, the coauthors of the paper include James Estes, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC, and Tim Tinker, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Why Home Improvement Is As Much About Increased Cleanliness ...

In the event that you were to ask home owners what they?d change inside their home should a major home improvement project be begun by them, the responses would be familiar. They?d confess to increasing the living room, modernising the kitchen or improving the bathroom facilities to incorporate a large bath or maybe a walk in shower room. The theme typically relates to a mix of practical and aesthetic values, making the every day living facilities better while also seizing on the possiblity to modernise the design and layout of the home. But there?s another price that should not be ignored and, in fact, tends to be resolved very nearly subconsciously. That is home hygiene. With the general modernisation of the home, the installation of new facilities and the provision of additional space, there?s to be able to obtain new and improved equipment. Therefore, the old, inefficient vacuum cleaner can be achieved away with and a Miele vacuum cleaner ordered, or the old plastic home container that has seen its day can be replaced by a modern Brabantia bin.It might appear initially glance like a somewhat simple matter, but the fact is that since increasing the home is about developing an in living conditions, the possiblity to increase the amount of cleanliness and health in the living room is just a core value. For this reason, it is really worth investing in the very best and modern models that focus on atmosphere, ground and reject management.Floor ManagementKeeping the surfaces of a home clear is vastly important. Involving the build-up of bacteria on the tiles of a flooring, to the dust and dirt that gets stuck in the fibres of an or rug, there?s plenty of health problems on our floors. It looks easy enough to help keep tiled, laminate and timber surfaces clean. Most of us scrubbing them routinely, using floor detergents to ensure germs are killed off. But it?s worth remembering that most cylinder vacuum cleaners are successful on hard floors when it comes to daily cleaning.Of course, rugs are an alternative matter, and an excellent vacuum cleaner is necessary if their hygiene is usually to be managed. This is where tube or vertical cleaner patterns are generally noteworthy, providing strong cleansing by powerfully licking soil and dust from the fibres.Air ManagementVacuum cleaners could play a role in strengthening the air quality in a home simply by eliminating therefore a lot of the dust particles that could otherwise be taken through the air. The atmosphere clean filter that is installed in to Miele models assures that the most percentage of particles stays in the bag.The development of hand held vacuums, meanwhile, indicates that dust on almost every floor may be sucked up. Crucially, this kind of vacuum enables use of some of the tightest areas, like on top of cabinets and closets, and on blinds, photos and even clothes.Of course, there are other items that aid in the filtration of dirt and micro organisms from the atmosphere. Right ventilation methods, air sanitisers and air dehumidifiers all have part to play too.Refuse ManagementPerhaps probably the most plausible way of managing home refuse is always to have bins, but there are several contemporary requirements in bins that may improve health conditions at home considerably. For example, a Brabantia bin is more than just a storage space for refuse because between the variety are bins which have closely fitting lids to make certain even odours stay trapped inside. Perhaps the containers are pedal, touch, senor or slide handled, the fact is that the lid shuts automatically, guaranteeing higher quantities of hygiene. Some also provide spaces for the 2 main kinds of waste, specifically paper and food, this means that house decline could be more efficiently recycled. The fact that the inside of the bins can also be simply wiped clear, means that cleanliness in the bin itself is simple to handle, while the availability of mini bins to remain on the work top or desk means food can be dispensed of faster and conveniently than ever before.Taking on an improvement project is a significant thing. But the huge benefits aren?t just stylistic or useful, but also need to do with health too not least as it offer an reason to purchase a much better Miele vacuum cleaner.

Business Economics and the Digital Coupon | MyDealCompass ...

The adoption of smartphone growth is rapidly changing the retail shopping experience for both shoppers and businesses. Shoppers armed with their trusty smartphones continually want instant access to pricing information and special offers via their hand-held devices. A huge factor of this mega-trend is the use of digital coupons. This trend is further driven by group-buying, acceptance among the young and ease of redemption. Recessionary economics plays a role but the use of electronic coupons appears to be here to stay, regardless of the economic climate.

Those businesses who do not jump on board and join the digital coupon trend are risking a loss of business. Many businesses are hesitating to incorporate a large digital coupon plan into their marketing strategy because as the economic conditions improve they think shoppers will discontinue their reliance of retail coupons and savings codes. However, it is a fact that the couponing trend has continued to grow, even as the economy improves. Many shoppers now base their shopping activities where they can receive the best savings and discounts.

Also, the cost of advertising digital coupon deals online can be extensive with some of the coupon sites that are available. However, with myDealCompass, businesses can advertise their savings and discounts for a low monthly fee with no additional charges. Once their deal is live they can also tweek and change the savings as they see fit. This is an advantage that is not offered on other digital discount sites. As a result, there is a definite business advantage to join the digital coupon trend and give shoppers the instant access to deals that they search for.

Calif. kids' football team hit with bounty scandal

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) ? In a pee-wee version of the NFL's bounty scandal, the head coach and league president of an Orange County children's football team have been suspended amid allegations that players were offered up to $50 in cash to knock opponents out of games.

National Pop Warner officials suspended Darren Crawford of the Tustin Pee Wee Red Cobras and Tustin President Pat Galentine until the program can investigate and rule on the allegations, according to the Orange County Register (bit.ly/OsCHwh).

The investigation is expected to take at least several weeks, Pop Warner spokesman Josh Pruce said.

The Cobras, consisting mainly of 10- and 11-year-olds, advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl last year and finished the season with a 12-1 record.

A group of parents alleged that during the season, Crawford and a then-assistant coach, Richard Bowman, offered youngsters cash for big hits and to knock targeted opposing players out of playoff games.

One boy left a game because of a mild concussion and another former assistant coach, John Zanelli, claims the player that hit him was rewarded with cash.

Crawford, Bowman and Galentine consistently have denied that any cash incentives were paid.

Pop Warner's Orange Empire Conference commissioner, Bobby Espinosa, said he found no evidence of a bounty program after reviewing allegations from six parents and four players. They alleged that bounties of between $20 and $50 were offered during three playoff games at the end of the 2011 season, the Register reported.

Galentine sent Tustin Pop Warner board members an email Thursday about the suspensions.

"The singular focus of our board continues to be the safety and well-being of our kids and the continued success of TPW," he wrote, urging support for young players who "have been placed in the crossfire of this issue by no choice of their own."

Former Tustin Pop Warner President Mark Gutierrez was named acting president during Galentine's absence.

The NFL suspended four players after concluding they were involved in a pay-for-injury bounty pool that ran for three seasons from 2009-2011 and offered cash rewards for knocking opposing players out of games.

The players were reinstated after they successfully appealed the suspensions. New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton was suspended for the season.

Colon Cancer Gene Database May Assist Research Efforts - Drugs ...

WEDNESDAY Sept. 26, 2012 -- A colorectal gene database will help further research into the disease, a new study suggests.

The CRCgene database gathers all genetic association studies on colorectal cancer. It allows researchers to accurately interpret the risk factors of the disease and provides insight into the direction of further research, according to Julian Little, with the department of epidemiology and community medicine at the University of Ottawa, and colleagues.

To determine the genetic factors associated with colorectal cancer, they analyzed data from all published genetic association studies on colorectal cancer.

The researchers identified 16 independent gene variants with the strongest links to colorectal cancer, among 23 variants, a number lower than expected. Unfortunately, the researchers say, this reduces the feasibility of combining variants as a profile in a prediction tool to identity people who are at increased risk for colorectal cancer and who should be screened for the disease.

Even so, the analysis "provides a resource for mining available data and puts into context the sample sizes required for the identification of true associations," the researchers wrote in the Sept. 27 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

About 950,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed each year, according to a journal news release. Risk factors for the disease include age, diet, lifestyle and possibly genetics.

Paolo Gabriele, the papal butler who fell from grace

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - By day, Paolo Gabriele was a member of the Vatican's innermost circle, the "papal family", possessing a key held by fewer than 10 people to an elevator leading from a small Vatican courtyard directly into Pope Benedict's apartments.

By night, he was a different man, obsessed with helping root out what he saw as corruption in the Roman Catholic Church.

The pious butler who helped Pope Benedict dress and served him his meals now finds himself on trial for aggravated theft, accused of stealing documents in what could prove to be the most sensational Vatican trial in decades.

Gabriele, 46, a reserved family man and devout Catholic, told investigators he acted for the good of the Church.

While tending to the man Catholics believe is Christ's vicar on earth, the clean-cut, black-haired butler said he saw "evil and corruption everywhere in the Church", and began leaking the papers that would cause one of the biggest crisis of Pope Benedict's papacy.

The documents, which Gabriele admits he photocopied and passed to an Italian journalist, contained allegations of corruption in the Vatican's business dealings.

His trial, which could bring a sentence of up to four years in jail, starts in the Vatican's small tribunal on Saturday.

Gabriele told a pre-trial inquiry that he never received payment for the papers, which included personal letters to the pope, but felt he was acting for the good of the Church and as an "agent" of the Holy Spirit.

"I was sure that a shock, perhaps by using the media, could be a healthy thing to bring the Church back on the right track," he said in pre-trial testimony, explaining how he felt the pope was not sufficiently informed of problems the letters outlined.

The butler, who told investigators he was in a state of confusion and disorder in the months leading to his arrest, seems to have been thrown into a crisis of conscience by insights into the inner workings of the Vatican that he encountered.

Acquaintances interviewed by investigators described a devout Catholic and a good father who lived in a comfortable apartment in the Vatican with his wife and three children.

To fathom the apparent gulf between Gabriele's acts and his appearance as a reserved and obedient servant of the pope, the Vatican summoned psychologists to determine if he could be held responsible for his actions.

The results were conflicting. One report cited in the indictment concluded that Gabriele showed no signs of major psychological disorder or of being dangerous.

But another concluded the opposite: that while he could be held accountable for his actions, he was socially dangerous, easily influenced and could "commit acts that could endanger himself or others".

The latter described Gabriele as subject to ideas of "grandiosity", as attention-seeking, and as a simple man with a "fragile personality with paranoid tendencies covering profound personal insecurity".

He turned to more than one person to share his anguish. He confided in a man he called his "Spiritual Father", referred to only as "B" in the indictment, and passed copies of incriminating papers to him as well as to the journalist.

"B" told investigators he destroyed the documents because he knew they had been obtained illegally.

The trial may shed more light on the strange case of Paolo Gabriele, the man who started out as a humble cleaner in the Vatican, slowly rose to become an aide to one of the most revered spiritual leaders, and then quickly fell from grace.

Smoking in movies increases in 2011, reverses five years of progress

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Top box office films last year showed more onscreen smoking than the prior year, reversing five years of steady progress in reducing tobacco imagery in movies, according to a new UCSF study.

Moreover, many of the top-grossing films of 2011 with significant amounts of smoking targeted a young audience, among them the PG-rated cartoon Rango and X-Men: First Class." The more smoking young people see in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking, the U.S. Surgeon General has reported.

The study will be available Sept. 27, 2012 in Preventing Chronic Disease Journal, an online, peer-reviewed publication of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

"Hollywood has still not fixed this problem," said lead author Stanton A. Glantz, PhD, a professor of medicine at UCSF and director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. "The result of the increase in onscreen smoking in youth-rated films will be more kids starting to smoke and developing tobacco-induced disease."

The UCSF study was conducted in conjunction with Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down!, a project of Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails, which annually tracks tobacco use in the nation's top-grossing movies.

Altogether, the 134 top-grossing films of 2011 depicted nearly 1,900 tobacco "incidents," the analysis found. An incident is defined as one use or implied use (such as a lit cigarette) of a tobacco product by an actor.

Total tobacco incidents per movie rose seven percent from 2010 to 2011. Among movies rated G, PG or PG-13, smoking incidents per movie soared by 36 percent.

The data was obtained by counting tobacco incidents in movies whose box office sales ranked in the top 10 for at least a week.

Some of the films that showed the most smoking were "period" movies, such as "The Help," "Midnight in Paris," and "Hugo," which depicted an era when smoking was more common than it is today. But others were fantasy films, including "Cowboys & Aliens," "Green Hornet" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1," which were aimed squarely at the youth market, noted Glantz.

"Movies continue to deliver billions of smoking images to adolescents," the authors reported.

In stark contrast to prior years, the three major film companies that have adopted policies designed to discourage smoking in their movies depicted just as many tobacco incidents per youth-rated movie as companies that lack tobacco use policies.

Those three studios with tobacco reduction policies are: Time Warner (established policy in 2005), Comcast (2007) and Disney (2004). The three companies with no such policies: Viacom, News Corp. and Sony.

The study authors, noting that about two-thirds of subsidies for top-grossing movies are earmarked for productions with smoking, recommended that health departments work with policy makers to correlate movie subsidies with public health interests in reducing smoking.

"These results underscore a need for an industry-wide policy to keep smoking out of films marketed to youth," Glantz said. "An R rating for movies with smoking would give film producers an incentive to keep smoking out of movies aimed at young viewers. The exception would be when the movie clearly reflects the dangers and consequences of tobacco use, or represents the smoking of a real historical figure."

Tobacco, the leading cause of preventable and premature death, kills an estimated 443,000 Americans annually, according to the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Every day in the U.S., an estimated 3,800 young people smoke a cigarette for the first time, the agency reported earlier this year.

Co-authors are Anne Iaccopucci, youth program manager, and Kori Titus, chief executive officer, of Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails; and Jonathan R. Polansky, a consultant with Onbeyond LLC.

The analysis was funded by the American Legacy Foundation.

For decades, Glantz and UCSF have been at the forefront of tobacco research, disclosing how the tobacco industry manipulated its products and led the public into cigarette addiction. Smoke Free Movies, a project run by Glantz at UCSF, centers on reducing cinematic smoking. The UCSF Legacy Library, now 12 years old, has more than 13 million documents on file that were released as a result of litigation against the major tobacco companies related to their advertising, manufacturing, marketing, sales, political, public relations and scientific activities.
