Church services held for murdered Manchester policewomen

By Matt Duxbury

Special church services are being held in Greater Manchester to remember murdered PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone.

The two officers were killed in a gun and grenade attack after they responded to reports of a burglary in the Hattersley area last Tuesday (September 18th).

Dale Cregan, 29, has been charged with the murders and is due to appear at Manchester Crown Court next week.

Sir Peter Fahy, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, said a prayer vigil will be held on Tuesday to mark a week since the officers' deaths.

In an interview with BBC One's Songs of Praise, he described the killings as "devastating for the whole force".

He added: "I think a lot of us feel passionately that policing is a vocation.

"It's not just a job and I think that's almost what you go back to in difficult times and difficult circumstances."

More than 30,000 messages have been left on Greater Manchester Police's online book of condolence following the deaths of 32-year-old PC Bone and PC Hughes, who was 23.
