Population growth is threat to other species, poll respondents say

Nearly two-thirds of American voters believe that human population growth is driving other animal species to extinction and that if the situation gets worse, society has a "moral responsibility to address the problem," according to new national public opinion poll.

A slightly lower percentage of those polled ? 59% ? believes that population growth is an important environmental issue and 54% believe that stabilizing the population will help protect the environment.

The survey was conducted on behalf of the nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity, which unlike other environmental groups has targeted population growth as part of its campaign to save wildlife species from extinction.

Special report: Beyond 7 billion -- bending the population curve

The center has handed out more than half a million condoms at music concerts, farmers markets, churches and college campuses with labels featuring drawings of endangered species and playful, even humorous, messages such as, "Wrap with care, save the polar bear."

The organization hired a polling firm to show other environmental groups that their fears about alienating the public by bringing up population matters are overblown, said Kieran Suckling, the center's executive director. When the center broke the near-silence on population growth with its condom campaign, other environmental leaders "reacted with a mix of worry and horror that we were going to experience a huge backlash and drag them into it," he said.

Instead, Suckling said the campaign has swelled its membership ? now about 500,000 ? and donations and energized 5,000 volunteers who pass out prophylactics. He said a common response is, "Thank God, someone is talking about this critical issue."

The poll results, he said, show such views are mainstream.

In the survey, the pollsters explained that the world population hit 7 billion last year and is projected to reach 10 billion by the end of the century. Given those facts, 50% of people reached by telephone said they think the world population is growing too fast, while 38% said population growth was on the right pace and 4% thought it was growing too slowly. About 8% were not sure.

Special report: Beyond 7 billion -- bending the population curve

Sixty-one percent of respondents expressed concerned about disappearing wildlife. Depending how the question was phrased, 57% to 64% of respondents said population growth was having an adverse effect. If widespread wildlife extinctions were unavoidable without slowing human population growth, 60% agreed that society has a moral responsibility to address the problem.

Respondents didn't make as clear a connection between population and climate change, reflecting the decades-old debate over population growth versus consumption. Although 57% of respondents agreed that population growth is making climate change worse, only 46% said they think having more people will make it harder to solve, and 34% said the number of people will make no difference.

Asked about natural resources, 48% said they think the average American consumes too much. The view split sharply along party lines, with 62% of Democrats saying the average American consumes too much, compared with 29% of Republicans. Independents fell in the middle at 49%.

The survey of 657 registered voters was conducted Feb. 22-24 by Public Policy Polling, a Raleigh, N.C., firm that takes the pulse of voters for Democratic candidates and Democratic-leaning clients. It has a margin of error of 3.9%.

Natalie Vishny: 12 Ways To Personalize Your Wedding So Family And Friends Will Love It

When you put the most important event of your life in my hands, I take it personally because when you get right down to it, an event is a reflection of style -- YOUR personal style! How will you and your fianc?'s personality shine through on your wedding day? How will you make your wedding ABOUT you in ways that will leave long-lasting memories for all of your guests? Here are 12 ways (with 38 more to see here) to leave your fingerprint on your special day.

  • When you send your invitations, include a personalized note to each guest. Nothing says, "You're important to us" more than a few words in your handwriting.
  • Create your own stamp!
  • Mail invitations so that they arrive on a Saturday. Statistics show that social invitations are opened more frequently on Saturdays. And you'll receive RSVPs faster.
  • Pick your monogram. It will be great on your invites, your menus and anywhere else you decide to use it.
  • Plan an unconventional wedding ceremony start time... 5:23 (Date you met?) 7:04 (Date you got engaged?) 2:13 (Your Grandparent's Wedding Date?)
  • Wedding Seating: why do you have to have the traditional seating? Think Round, Arc Shaped, Unique Chairs, Benches. Anything that suits your style
  • Have a note or a flower on your parents' chairs for the ceremony.
  • Serve wines from the year you met!
  • Personalize your sweetheart table with awesome chairs. Get inspiration from vintage-rentals.com and luxeappeal.com or, even better, your parents' dining room chairs and family linens.
  • Favors should be edible or usable. Pick your favorite treat that reflects your personalities.
  • Dessert stations are all the rage right now. What better way to personalize a dessert station than to ask all of the cooks in your family to provide two dozen cookies or treats of their own.
  • Make sure to give your guests a farewell that they'll remember. Think about your favorite morning treats. Get them from your bakery and have every guest leave with a "Breakfast Treat".

It's great to find inspiration on blogs, in magazines, and on Pinterest; but remember, it's about YOU. Your personal touch will be what makes memories for your guests to remember long past the fingerprints on the glasswear.

Asian Pacific Group makes people turn their radios up in new ...

Screen shot 2011-10-01 at 6.54.09 AM-thumb-200x134-58815-thumb-200x134-100376.jpgThe latest work for Naked Communications Melbourne for Asian Pacific Group goes live next week. Asian Pacific Group is a property developer that owns and manages properties in Melbourne.

The latest campaign's objective is to generate leads for commercial real estate being sold around the CBD. The campaign takes an extremely novel approach and uses radio as an interactive medium in a manner never done before.

LISTEN TO THE SPOT 1
LISTEN TO THE SPOT 2

Says Simon Veksner, head of ideas at Naked Communications, Melbourne: "The idea 'It's a Secret', has behaviour change principles at its heart. We are inviting people to hear about the incredible commercial offers mentioned in the radio ads However, the only way people will be able to hear the offers is if they actually make the effort to turn their radio up. We believe that getting people physically involved in the communication is a great way to ensure they pay attention to the message. Radio can be a cluttered medium - we are sure this will get people's attention."

The radio buy is across MMM and SEN and is only being bought during breakfast and drive times to ensure people listening to the radio can turn the volume (up and down) easily.

Pentagon says it will resume F-35 flights

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon said on Thursday it would resume flights of its F-35 fighter jets, which were grounded a week ago after a crack was discovered in an engine of a test plane.

"F-35 flight operations have been cleared to resume," Pentagon spokeswoman Kyra Hawn said.

No additional cracks were found during inspections of engines in the rest of the F-35 fleet or in any spare engines, Hawn said.

Matthew Bates, a spokesman for Pratt & Whitney, which supplies the engines for the planes, said the Pentagon's F-35 program office had decided to lift a temporary suspension of flight operations after it conducted extensive tests on the affected engine part. The tests showed that a crack in a turbine blade stemmed from the "unique operating environment" in flight tests rather than a design flaw, he said.

Bates said Pratt had been working around the clock with Pentagon officials to determine the cause of the crack in the engine blade.

"The team has determined that root cause is sufficiently understood for the F-35 to safely resume flight," Bates said.

The engine in question had operated at high temperatures more than four times longer than a typical F-35 flight, which led to a separation of the "grain boundary" of this particular blade, he said.

Pratt, a unit of United Technologies Corp, supplies the engine for the single-engine, single-seat fighter plane, which is built by Lockheed Martin Corp.

The Pentagon announced the grounding of all F-35 warplanes on Friday after an inspection revealed a crack on a turbine blade in the jet engine of an F-35 being tested at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

It was the second engine-related grounding in two months of the $396 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the Pentagon's largest weapons program. The Marines Corps version of the plane was grounded for nearly a month starting in mid-January because of a faulty hose in the engine.

Cardinals begin long process of picking new pope

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - With Pope Benedict XVI now officially in retirement, Catholic cardinals from around the world begin on Friday the complex, cryptic and uncertain process of picking the next leader of the world's largest church.

Some details are still unclear, owing to Benedict's break with the tradition that papacies end with a pope's death, so these "princes of the Church" will first hold an informal session before traditional rounds of talks begin on Monday.

No front-runner stands out among the 115 cardinal electors - those aged under 80 - due to enter the Sistine Chapel for the conclave that picks the new pope, so discreetly sizing up potential candidates will be high on the cardinals' agenda.

They will also use the general congregations, the closed-door consultations preceding a conclave, to discuss future challenges such as better Vatican management, the need for improved communication and the continuing sexual abuse crisis.

Benedict ended his difficult eight-year reign on Thursday pledging unconditional obedience to whoever succeeds him to lead the world's 1.2 billion Catholics at one of the most problematic periods in the Church's 2,000-year history.

"The discussion we have in the congregations will be most important for the intellectual preparation" for choosing a pope, said Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley, adding the electors were already preparing spiritually for the vote by intense prayer.

"I would imagine each of us has some kind of list of primary candidates, and others secondary," said Cardinal Francis George of Chicago at a media briefing with O'Malley and another American cardinal, Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston.

MOST SECRETIVE ELECTION

Conclaves are among the world's most secretive elections, with no declared candidates, no open campaigning and electors who often do not know more than a few dozen men in the room. Electors are sworn to secrecy about the actual voting itself.

George said cardinals consulted other electors before the conclave to learn more about possible choices, asking "what do you know about this candidate?" or "what kind of person is he?"

O'Malley, at his first conclave and already being mentioned in Italian media as a potential candidate, said he had been "using the Internet a lot" to read up on other cardinals.

Conclaves traditionally begin 15 days after the seat of St. Peter, as the papal office is called, becomes vacant. But that includes time for mourning and funeral ceremonies for a dead pope, so Benedict issued a decree allowing an earlier start.

From Monday, the cardinals will discuss how long they want to hold general congregations before going into the conclave; its name comes from the Latin term "cum clave" - with a key - to show they are locked away until a pope is chosen.

Cardinals over 80 cannot join them in the voting, but they are allowed to attend the general congregations and discuss the challenges to the Church with the electors.

Nothing is set yet, but the Vatican seems to be aiming for an election by mid-March so the new pope can be installed in office before Palm Sunday on March 24 and lead Holy Week services culminating in Easter the following Sunday.

HELICOPTER INTO HISTORY

The cardinals will not see a top secret report prepared for Pope Benedict on mismanagement and infighting in the Curia, the Church's bureaucracy. But its three cardinal authors will be in the general congregations to advise electors on its findings.

"Since we don't really know what's in the report, I think we'll depend on the cardinals in the congregations to share with us what they think will be valuable for us to know to make the right decision for the future," O'Malley said.

In an emotional farewell to cardinals on Thursday morning in the Vatican's frescoed Sala Clementina, Benedict appeared to send a strong message to the cardinals and the faithful to unite behind his successor, whoever he turns out to be.

The appeal was significant because for the first time in history, there will be a reigning pope in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace and his retired predecessor living in a small monastery in the Vatican Gardens not far away.

Benedict left the Vatican by helicopter for the papal summer residence of Castel Gandolfo south of Rome to be far from the conclave and not influence it. He will move into the monastery when refurbishing is finished in about two months.

Afraid of Negotiating? Just Consider It Expected of You

Afraid of Negotiating? Just Consider It Expected of YouMany of us shy away from negotiating, even though not negotiating could cost you thousands of dollars on your salary, next car, or other big-ticket item. To feel more comfortable and confident negotiating, consider it expected of you.

The DailyWorth financial blog notes that many companies significantly mark up their items just so there's room to negotiate. These include furniture stores (80% or more mark up) and jewelry stores (as much as 200% mark up). Even nursing homes are willing to compromise on price. While not every store or service will be open to negotiating, these examples suggest that you shouldn't fear looking like a tightwad if you try to bargain.

The article also cites a recent study that showed when salary is described as negotiable, job applicants were more likely to pursue salary discussions. (This was true even for women, who typically don't negotiate salary as much as men do.)

So if you're nervous about negotiating something, just think of it as something you're supposed to do. For tips on getting started, see the source article below or our previous negotiating tips.
