When employees at Monroe, La.-based CenturyLink raised enough money to buy 106,275 pounds of food and donated $271,900 for a children?s charity, their company?s foundation chipped in another $1 million to support their efforts.
Employees at 650 CenturyLink locations around the country participated in a companywide ?Feed the Children Backpack Buddies Food Drive? to help food banks in the communities where the company operates.
CenturyLink, the country?s third-?largest telecommunications firm, invited residents of those communities to pitch in as well.
Because food banks can buy food for less per pound than it is sold for in stores, the combined financial contributions bought 7.7 million pounds of groceries, the company estimates.
