Speaking on the occasion, Dr. A. Ramachandran,M.D.,Ph.D.,D.Sc.,FRCP.(Lond).(Edin), said, "Diabetes is a major health issue in our country. One of the important barriers in handling this issue is the change in behavior of the people and awareness on the importance of lifestyle modification. With research showing an increasing trend of Type 2 diabetes among children and adolescents, it is our endeavour to help strengthen awareness on diabetes management through a plethora of awareness initiatives on World Diabetes Day reaching out to all target groups. The 'Diabetes Reach' program is a big step to reach out to 3 lakh people including 1 lakh school children, creating awareness"
Type-2 Diabetes (T2DM), has become a serious health threat with exploding population and changing lifestyle. The prevalence of Type-2 diabetes has achieved an endemic proportion and is currently a global public health threat. The prevalence of T2DM among adults is expected to rise from 285 million in 2010 to 438 million by the year 2030. The numbers would probably be even far more disturbing if we count the number of associated lifestyle disorders like obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and impaired glucose tolerance.
