Optimism is good for health Whitmore Mansion. Medicine, Fitness ...

Being optimistic makes a difference in adolescent behavior and, in particular against the onset of depressive symptoms. In the study, a prospective study on the effects of optimism on the risks to adolescent health , published in February 2011 Number of Pediatrics , the authors evaluated 5634 students aged 12 to 14 years in three years optimistic thinking style, emotional problems, substance use and antisocial behavior. The levels of optimism in boys remained stable, but in girls, there were marked falls in optimism in the study. Above all, the risk for subsequent development of young people who reported high levels of optimism were almost half those of the less optimistic. Optimism is also protective against the development of substance abuse and antisocial behaviors such as theft, interpersonal violence and property damage. The authors found that despite the optimism is protective against the risk of adolescent health, is not a panacea.

Preventive interventions should also address other aspects of psychological functioning and interpersonal and social circumstances in which young adolescents are growing.
