Wal-Mart's Zero Tolerance Policy ? Center for Christian Business ...

Ethical business means good business practices in our companies and in those who do business with us. ?Wal-Mart has endeavored to have proper policies for good standards on treatment of employees and working conditions. These have been well published, but some suppliers have failed to follow these standards.? Now Wal-Mart has announced a zero tolerance policy.? Those suppliers or factories that fail Wal-Mart?s standards will be banned from doing business with them and their names will be posted on their website. Engage in the conversation:

1. Do you agree with Wal-Mart?s policy and why?

Observation: Clearly this policy will have a positive effect on working conditions in its suppliers, because those without good standards will not be in business.

2. Do you worry about the workers of the factories that will be closed?

Observation: One reason factories have poor working environments? is lack of capital.? In the U.S. we have called this ?pulling yourself up by your boat straps.?? Requiring world class standards for working environment means that these factories will not supply Wal-Mart and many will close.? The workers will not have jobs, because these factories are in locations where work is not available.
