Play set to resume in East London

Day one of the Africa Open Golf Challenge is set to resume at 14:15, ending a delay of nearly three hours due to wind.

Gusts in excess of 70 km/h, with wind speeds averaging between 35 and 45 km/h had earlier caused European and Sunshine Tour officials to halt play shortly before 11:30am.

Only 11 players in the morning field currently find themselves under par, with a score of 81 already having been posted and numerous others well into black numbers.

Of course, others didn?t find it as tough. Jaco van Zyl began his round at the par-four ninth hole, and a solid four into the strong westerly wind there got his round off to a good start. Two birdies and an eagle at the par-five 15th hole then yielded a four-under back nine of 31, and, when play was halted on his 15th hole, the 33 year old found himself still at four under and in a share of the lead - with an eagle putt awaiting him at the par-four fifth hole.

?I?m obviously really chuffed with how I?m playing out there,? Van Zyl told supersport.com. ?It?s getting really difficult out there, to the point where the wind is literally blowing you off your feet. I think it?s a pretty good call, because it?s not getting easier out there.?

The interruption with less than four holes remaining may have annoyed some, but Van Zyl was pragmatic about the decision and said that regaining his focus is part of the job.

?Playing in Europe is no different to this and we?re used to these weather delays. It?s an unfortunate circumstance of playing a sport where weather is a part of what we do,? he explained.

The decision to resume play was taken shortly after 13:30, and, with a sunset forecast at 19:01, there remains the outside possibility of a full day?s play.
